Staff of the Visayas Primary Healthcare Services, Inc. regularly attends the monthly meetings of the four people’s organizations of the project to be updated of the activities of the association and to discuss about the project activities.
Disaster preparedness was discussed during the monthly meetings. In Sitio Lawis Pasil, this included the regular clean up drives of the members. It was pointed out that if the narrow alleys of the crowded sitio are filled with garbage thrown carelessly, this clogs the drainage systems, causing rainwater to back up. As a result, heavy rains can turn the alleys into flooded pathways. This not only disrupts daily life but also brings health risks, as standing water can breed mosquitoes and other pests. The smell of rotting garbage worsens the already tough living conditions. The association leaders pointed out that this situation highlights the urgent need for better waste management and awareness in the community.
In Sitio Wang Yu, the meetings revolved around collaborating with the Mambaling local government unit to do regular clean up drives. The situation is similar to that in Sitio Lawis where garbage is wantonly thrown away and clogging up the drainage.
The meetings also prepared for the fire drills and invitations were made to the Cebu City Fire Station to serve as resource persons. The leaders committed to go to the fire station and talk with the station commander about the project to get his support. The members also said that this is a good networking move so that if a fire ever strikes the area, they will immediately know whom to contact.
The meetings also worked out to collaborate with their respective barangays in requesting for fire extinguishers to be placed in strategic locations in their communities. These will be used in the fire drills.
In all the areas, the associations also discussed about complying with the requirements in applying as workers’ association with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). These requirements included the association’s Constitution and By-Laws, list of officers, list of members, minutes of its meetings and financial report. With the acquisition of the Certificate of Registration as a workers’ association, the association will be able to avail of the livelihood program of the government agency.
